Direct and Indirect Speech

Uncle peng asking Bowbow

1. Uncle Peng asks Bowbow, "Do you want this bat?"
2. Uncle Peng asked Bowbow whether he wanted the bat.

In the first sentence we have quoted the actual words of the speaker.(Uncle Peng). This is known as direct speech.

While writing a sentence in the direct speech, we should note the following:-
1. The quoted words should be opened and closed with inverted commas. "Do you want this bat?"

2. The quoted words should always begin with a capital letter. "Do you want this bat?"

In the second sentence we have only repeated as to what Uncle Peng told Bowbow. This is called Indirect Speech. Indirect Speech is always written in the past tense.
