Correct use of Active Voice and Passive Voice

Active voice is used when the subject does the action. However in certain cases, the subject (noun/pronoun) is vauge or indefinite.
e.g. Somebody stole the chain.

In such cases the passive voice is generally preferred.
e.g. The chain was stolen.
